Had an electronics class 20 years ago(1.5 semesters), was told that a capactior (big one) would reduce the power consumption. If true, I would like to place two capacitors inline to reduce the cost of running my A/C. Thank you

If you reduce the power to your compressor - you may burn it out. It is designed to run at specific voltage and amperage (wattage). Anyway, installing a capacitor will not reduce the power consumption. It may, however, prevent spikes of voltage and amperage from affecting the unit if you don't already have one on it. It should already have a capacitor on it. It will also help 'kick start' it when it turns on. Again, you should already have one on it for these purposes.
Reply:Your idea will not work. The fundamental reason is that you are not charged for power (kilowatts). You are charged for energy (kilowatt X hours). This is a common problem in common parlance where people do not understand the difference between energy and power, and they use them incorrectly. Power is energy used (or produced) divided by time, in the same way that speed is distance divided by time. The distance you go is the speed times the time.
The total amount of energy you use will be determined by the efficiency of your air conditioner, insulation, temperature gradient, desired temperature, and so forth. That is, there is no quick fix for this problem.
